Poetry has always been something I've been interested in, but I've shied away from it because I felt like I didn't really understand it. I've experimented with haiku, because haiku has rules that I could understand. Poetry in general has always seemed too broad. But now I've been actually looking into it. Partially because I've been exposed to a lot more poetry lately, in an unexpected place--Instagram. But partly because I now find myself with things that I want to express, and I'm looking for ways to do it. The things I want to express have to do with feeling and emotion, and I'm finding that traditional prose is not sufficient for the task.
So of course, I went to the Internet. Google did right by me, because the first link I was shown was Poetry Writing: 10 Tips on How to Write a Poem. The link is part of a blog by Dennis G. Jerz, Associate Professor of English–New Media Journalism at Seton Hill University. His ten tips were very helpful. I'll be referring to his page again, as well as checking in to see what else he has to say.
